William D. Wente, 83, of Springfield, died at 7:26 am, Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at his home. He was born May 23, 1933 in Neoga, IL, to Clem P and Lillian Schleper Wente. He married Jo Ann Petrella on May 26, 1962 and she survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Marie (John) Bukovic and Carolyn Zink both of Springfield; one son, Thomas Wente of Springfield; two sisters, Pat Kunz of Effingham and Alice Fisher of Sherman; one brother Mike (Rachel) Wente of Los Angeles, CA and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Betty Metzger, Mary Lou Barber and Delores Anderson; one brother, Clemmie Wente and one grandson, William James Douglas.
William was a member of St. Aloysius Church. He was a US Navy Veteran serving from 1953-1957 on the USS Yosemite AD19 Association and USS Savage DER 386 Association. He was a 4th degree member of Knights of Columbus Council #4175, Bishop Griffin Assembly. He was a member of Eastern Illinois Alumni Association, PI Omega PI; National Treasury Employees Union; National Association of Retired Federal Employees; American Association Retired People, American Legion Post 120 in Effingham, Camp New Hope Boosters Club and was a diehard Chicago Cubs Fan.
Visitation: 4-7 pm, Friday, May 27, 2016 at Staab Funeral Home with a prayer service at 4 pm.
Funeral Mass: 10 am, Saturday, May 28, 2016, at St. Aloysius Church with Reverend Clint Honkomp officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Camp New Hope or Special Olympics
