SPRINGFIELD – William D. “Bill” Ramey, 85 of Springfield, died Saturday, October 20, 2012 at St. Joseph’s Home. He was born August 5, 1927 in Springfield to John W. and Mary Ribar Ramey He married the love of his life, Betty T. “Bunny” Carr at St. Patrick’s Church in Springfield on October 30, 1948. She preceded him in death in 2003. His parents, sisters Mildred Zattich, Betty Viele and granddaughter Lauren Ramey also preceded him in death.
Survivors include seven children, sons Mark (Rosann) Ramey of Chatham; Greg Ramey; Ty Ramey both of Springfield, Todd (Yvonne) Ramey of El Paso, TX; daughters Dana Ramey of Virden; Shawn (Greg) Murphy of Girard; Brittan (Brad) Bolin of Springfield; nine grandchildren Justin Ramey; Trevin Gubach; Ayrin Ramey; Emily Ramey; Michael Ramey; Lwaxana Ramey; Taylor Murphy; Brynne Scott; Claire Bolin; great grandson Griffyn Murphy; sisters Evelyn Mertz of Quincy; Mary Elaine McManus of Alexandria, VA; and Donna Jean Fletcher of Florissant, MO.; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was a graduate of Lanphier High School and attended Western Illinois University. Bill was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in WW II. He worked at Sangamo Electric (Sangamo Weston-Schlumberger) for 38 years, retiring as Head of Manufacturing for the company in 1985.
A resident of Springfield most of his life, Bill and his family lived in Girard and Rabun Gap, GA for several years before returning to Springfield in 1988.
Bill was a devoted son, husband and father. He worked multiple jobs throughout much of his career to support his family. He still found time to enjoy hobbies golf, fishing, food (especially chilli), watching birds, looking for antiques and junk, and following sports. He most enjoyed spending time with his wife Bunny and his children. Bill always had a smile and a compliment for everyone and made many friends at his final residence at St. Joseph’s Home.
Visitation: 4:00 – 7:00 pm, Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at Staab Funeral Home with prayers at 6:45 pm.
Funeral Mass: 9:30 am, Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at St. Aloysius Church with Rev. Thomas Donovan officiating. Burial will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery where Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail will conduct military honors.
