SPRINGFIELD – William Bill A. Cockayne, 70, of Springfield died at 2:05 p.m. Sunday, July 20, 2008, at his residence.
He was born Feb. 23, 1938, in Springfield, the son of Robert and Mary Cherry Cockayne. He
married Judith A. Coates on Sept. 26, 1959.
He was preceded in death by his father.
He is survived by his wife, Judy A. Cockayne of Springfield; a daughter, Vickie (husband, James) Kauffman of Springfield; a son, William Bill Cockayne of Phoenix; three grandchildren, Tami Tucker, and Brittany and Breanna Cockayne; his mother, Mary Cockayne of Springfield; four sisters, Roberta Mabie, Mary Alice Vicari, Judy (husband, Bob) Fassero, and Debbie (husband, Greg) Trello, all of Springfield; a brother, Tom (wife, Becky) Cockayne of Springfield; an aunt; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was a lifelong resident of Springfield. He worked as a meat cutter for 20 years at Gundy’s and IGA. He retired from the State of Illinois after 18 years with the Department of Public Aid. Until his illness, he worked at UTG for 11 years.
He was a graduate of Lanphier High School and was a member of St. Aloysius Church and the Elks Club. He was an avid Cardinals fan and enjoyed fishing, golfing, camping and mowing yards. He loved big band music, but his favorite past time was looking at memorabilia of his personal hero, Roy Rogers.
A prayer service will be held at 3:30 p.m. with visitation following from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2008, at Staab Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 24, 2008, at St. Aloysius Church, with the Rev. Donald Meehling officiating. Burial will be at Rochester Cemetery
