SHERMAN – William B. Bill Szoke, 95, of Sherman died at 1:30 a.m. on Monday, August 24, 2009, at Heritage Manor.
He was born on May 18, 1914, in Divernon to Charles and Sophia Bodish Szoke. He married Ruth McAfee on August 10, 1962. She preceded him in death on November 18, 2007. He was also preceded in death by his parents; six brothers; and two grandchildren.
He is survived by one daughter, Judy (Alvin) Nelson of Springfield; three sons, David Gerlach of Yakima, WA, John (Sue) Szoke of Aviston, IL, and Bill (Kathy) Szoke of Plymouth, MA; ten grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary (Joe) Rusciolelli of Riverton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bill was a member of Sherman United Methodist Church and the American Legion. He was a veteran, serving during World War II under General Patton. He received a purple heart. He was a machinist at Fiat Allis and Elgin Sweeper Co. Bill was a Sherman resident for the past 14 years. He was formerly of Horseshoe Bend, AR, and Bartlett, IL.
A memorial gathering will be held at Sherman United Methodist Church on Thursday, August 27, 2009, from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m., with Reverend Mike Pennell officiating. Burial will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted.
