SPRINGFIELD – William A. Wieland of Springfield, IL passed away Sunday, May 10, 2009, from leukemia at his residence, with his family present.
He was born on May 27, 1928, the son of Roy and Nellie Dare-Wieland in Springfield, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; one daughter; 2 sons; one stepdaughter; and one stepson.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Korean War. He retired after 44 years of working for a lawn care equipment company and was a member of the VFW Post 10302, Divernon Sportsman Club, and the Springriver Club. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman.
He is survived by his wife, Fern Wieland of Springfield; 3 sons, Robert (wife, Mary) Wieland of Andrew, William (companion, Brenda Taft) Wieland Jr. of Riverton and Kevin Wieland of Springfield; 5 grandchildren, Scott (wife, Patti) Wieland, Rebecca (husband, David) Turner, Timothy (wife, Bridget) Wieland, Jessica (husband, Jason) Cornwell, and William (companion, Jennifer Diaz) Wieland III; 2 stepgrandchildren, Christine (husband, Dale) Holtshouser and Benjamin Drabing; 3 great-grandsons; 7 great-granddaughters; 3 step-great-grandsons; and 2 step-great-granddaughters.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 14, 2009, at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where the Illinois Army National Guard Military Funeral Honors team will conduct military honors.
