William A. Sausaman

William A. “Bill” Sausaman Jr. 84, of Springfield passed away Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at Memorial Medical Center with family by his side.
He was born January 3, 1928, in Lafayette, Indiana the son of William A. and Marianna Hansell Sausaman, Sr. He married Edith L. Haines on May 27, 1953.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Edith of Springfield; four sons, Daniel (Cinda), Gerald “Buck” (companion, Pam Campbell), Jim (Pam), Richard (companion, Lynn McGlasson; two daughters, Alice Sausaman and Mary (Todd) Sausaman-Palmer; sixteen grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren and one great great grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, William Ira Sausaman, Sr. and brother, Gerald “Jare'” Sausaman.
Mr. Sausaman, a resident of Springfield since 1930, was a graduate of Enos Grade School, Lanphier High School and Sangamon State University. He also attended Springfield Junior College and Lincoln Land Community College.
William was employed by the Illinois Division of Highways for twenty eight years as an Engineering Technician, and had been owner of Springfield Connection tabulation business and also a Bridge Designing service. He owned Sausaman Cemetery Service, and started Northwest Mounted Horse Club in the 1960’s. He enjoyed his retirement sitting in his cabin on the Sangamon River watching wildlife.
William was a member of the United States Navy serving immediately after WW II in the South Pacific, he then served with the USNR in Japan and Korea during the Korean Conflict. He was a drilling Naval Reservist for twenty eight years, and was with the Illinois Army National Guard for ten years.
He was a life member of the following: the Navy Club Sangamon Ship 32 where he had been a five time past Commander during 1964, 1974, 1984, 1994, and 2004; Navy League, National Guard Association of Illinois, American Legion, and Elks Lodge #158.
He was a member of Sangamon County Farm Bureau, Sangamon Historical Society, Civil War Round Table, United Commercial Travelers, Travelers Protective Association of America, Blue Jackets Association, American Angus Association, and Amvets. He was a past president of the Springfield Audubon Society.

Funeral Service: 12 Noon, Saturday, December 8, 2012, at Staab Funeral Home with Vaughn Beeman officiating.
Burial will be in McKinnie Cemetery, where Military Honors will be conducted.
