SPRINGFIELD – The Rev. Wendell Smith, 85, of Springfield died at 12:55 a.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2008, at St. John’s Hospice.
He was born June 2, 1923 in Monticello, Ky., the son of Gamblin and Virda Denny Smith. He married Thelma Douthit in 1943; she preceded him in death in October 1982.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; two daughters; two infant children; three sisters; a brother; and two grandsons.
He is survived by five daughters, Wendy (husband, Alan) Hutchison and M. Jeannie Lehman, all of Springfield, Donna (husband, Gary) Dunbar of Chatham, Elaine Cooper of Crawfordsville, Ind., and Barb (husband, Joe) Phillips of Pleasant Plains; four sons, Wayne (wife, Linda) Smith of Ludington, Mich., Michael Smith and Philip (companion, Sherri Judd) Smith, all of Springfield, and Steven Smith of Chatham; 22 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Edith and Betty Lou, both of Pekin; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and companion, Patricia Switzer of Springfield.
He was a resident of Springfield since 1926. He retired after working as a mechanic at various garages. He was a member and pastor at Roanoke Southern Baptist Church for more than 10 years. He was also a member of the Baptist Association for many years and served for more than 40 years as a Baptist pastor.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, June 20, 2008, at Staab Funeral Home. Funeral services will begin at noon with Dr. Delbert Penrod officiating. Burial will be at Richland Cemetery in Cartwright Township, rural Sangamon County.
