Walter Clarence McClanahan, Jr., 91 of Springfield, died at 9:05 am, Friday, October 20, 2017, at Regency Care. He was born August 14, 1926, in Springfield to Walter McClanahan, Sr. and Maude Alford McClanahan, and they preceded him in death. He married Virginia Sharp on October 1, 1949, and she preceded him in death on May 2, 1989. He married Bettie L. Hubbard on June 28, 1991, and she survives.
Surviving are his wife, Bettie, son, Gary (Teresa) McClanahan of Springfield, step-son, Steven Hubbard of Springfield, step-daughter, Michelle (William) Hubbard Caldwell of Charlottesville, VA, grandson, Eric (fiancé, Tanya Squires) McClanahan of Riverton, four step-grandchildren: Andrea Caldwell, Michael Caldwell, Rhiannon Hubbard, and Aiden Hubbard; two great-granddaughters: Rachel and Sarah McClanahan of Springfield (daughters of Roi Lynn McClanahan), sisters: Dorothy McClanahan of Johnson City, TN and Hazel McClanahan Taylor of Winnsboro, TX.
Walter worked at Prairie Farms Dairy for 40 years and retired October 1, 1988. He was a United States Navy Veteran serving as a Naval Armed Guard on the merchant ships of SS Louie Pasture from 1943-1944, SS Warrior Point from 1944-1945, USS Caelum (AK 106) from 1945-1946, and USS Oakland (CL 95) from 1946-1947. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 10302, many bowling leagues and member of the ABC Nationals for 30 years, several golf leagues, and best of all he got to see his beloved Cubs win the World Series.
Visitation: 4 – 7 pm, Monday, October 23, 2017 at Staab Funeral Home -Springfield.
Funeral Service: 11:30 am, Tuesday, October 24, 2017 at Staab Funeral Home -Springfield with Pastor Clint Cook officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.
