SPRINGFIELD – Virginia Mae Atkins, 87, of Springfield died at 11:50 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2009, at St. John’s Hospital.
She was born May 13, 1922, in Springfield, the daughter of Herbert L. and Anna Rose Veseling Pierce. She married Lambert C. Atkins in 1942; he preceded her in death on Aug. 3, 1996.
She was also preceded in death by her parents and a great-granddaughter, Shannon Flynn.
She is survived by a daughter, Judith (Sy) Baker-Haber of New Berlin; three sons, Robert (Connie) Atkins of Thayer, Donald (Kathy) Atkins of Springfield and Dennis (Mara) Atkins of Pawnee; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Virginia was a lifelong resident of Springfield and was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Cabrini Church and she loved to play bingo and bunco.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug.16, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home, with a prayer service at 5 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17, 2009, at St. Cabrini Church, with the Rev. Richard Chiola officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to St. Cabrini Church.
