Virginia Anne Bomke, 89, of Springfield, IL, formerly of Pleasant Plains, died at 5:05 p.m. on Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at St. John’s Hospice. She was born July 7, 1920 in Springfield to Taylor and Anne Ballweg Bumgardner. She married Robert H. Bomke on June 28, 1942. He preceded her in death on November 17, 2000. She is also preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Alfred Bumgardner, and three sisters, Martha Warnke, Roslynn Mari and Geraldine Anders.
Virginia is survived by her daughter, Ann (husband: John) Charland of Springfield, a son, Art (Wife: Carol) Bomke of Vancouver, BC, three grandchildren, Aaron (Wife: Janna) Bomke of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Christine (Husband: Phil) Grizzard of Tucson, AZ and Bret Williams of Forrest Park, IL, three great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church where she was active in the Grace Circle. She graduated from Springfield High School and Illinois Normal Teacher’s College and briefly taught school in a one room school house. Her love for reading continued and she left teaching to begin working for the State of Illinois. She continued her education and received her Bachelor’s of Arts from Sangamon State University. She retired after 25 years as an assistant librarian at the State Children’s Library.
A visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, June 4, 2010 at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 714 E. Capital, Springfield, IL 62701. A funeral service will follow at 7 p.m. with Reverend Thomas B. Christell and Reverend Juli Lejman-Guy officiating. A committal service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 5, 2010 at Farmington Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Grace Lutheran Food Pantry or St. John’s Hospice.
