Vernon Roscoe Cobourn of Springfield passed away at St. Clara’s Manor in Lincoln on September 12, 2011. Vernon was born in Flora, Illinois, on January 4, 1948, to Leslie and Bernice Gilbert Cobourn. After graduating from Flora High School in 1966, he moved to the Chicago area and spent the next 40 years working as a shipping clerk for Simmons Furniture Company and as a scale clerk for Marblehead Lime Company, bowling in his church league, and rooting for the Cubs, Bears, and Bulls. He was a member of and held various offices in the Calumet City Church of Christ. He also served for many years as a volunteer officer with the Chicago District Evangelistic Association. Upon retirement, he moved to Springfield, where he was a member of Elm Street Christian Church and an enthusiastic participant in the Cardiac Rehab Program at the Prairie Heart Institute. He is survived by his brother, Stephen (Ada) Cobourn of Springfield; his aunts, Ellen Mason, Almedia Snethen, and Wilma Ralston of Fairfield; and by several cousins.
Visitation: 4-7 pm, Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at Staab Funeral Home in Springfield.
Graveside Service: 1:30 pm, Thursday, September 15, 2011 at Elmwood Cemetery in Flora with Pastor Ben VanHyning officiating.
