SPRINGFIELD – Velda Mae Garrelts, 80, of Springfield, formerly of Perry, Mo.; Quincy; and Fort Wayne, Ind., died at 9:28 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010, at Memorial Medical Center.
She was born June 8, 1929, in Jesup, Iowa, the daughter of Cato L. and Auzetta M. Rogge Kaiser. She married Glen Garrelts on Nov. 28, 1954; he preceded her in death June 15, 2004.
She was also preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Kathryn Shaffer.
She is survived by a daughter, Sherry Scott of Springfield; a son, Steve (Ann) Scott of Springfield; a granddaughter, Dawn Ramey of Springfield; a great-grandson, Cameron Ramey; a sister, Pauline Smith of Waterloo, Iowa; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Velda was a resident of Springfield for the last 16 years. She was a homemaker and formerly worked for Land of Lincoln Bank. She also owned and operated Green Meadows Restaurant.
She was of the Methodist Faith. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her dog, Missy. She also enjoyed reading, especially history.
Private family services to be held, with Vaughn Beeman officiating. Burial will be in Old Salem Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Animal Protective League.
