Urania P. ""Nina"" Giavaras

Urania “Nina” P. Giavaras, 87, of Springfield, passed away at 2:55 am, Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at Memorial Medical Center. She was born on January 17, 1931 in East Orange, N.J. to Angelos and Marie (Spetseris) Patsuris. She married John Giavaras in 1963 and he preceded her in death on January 26, 1999.

Also preceding her in death are her parents and one brother, Theodore Patsuris.

Survivors include one son, Constantine “Dean” Giavaras of Des Plaines, IL; one daughter, Frances Keeney of Springfield; two grandchildren, Simon and Micah Giavaras; one niece and one cousin.

Nina retired from Lincoln Land Community College as the Director of the Study Skills Center after twenty years of service.

She was a member of St. Anthony Hellenic Orthodox Church, Past President District 186 Board of Education, AAUW, Evening Etude, National Association of Developmental Education, Illinois Association of Learning Assistance Professionals and past board member of Sangamon & Menard County Crime Stoppers.

Nina was passionate about life-long learning and enjoyed collecting mementos from her travels.

Visitation: 10 am – 12 pm, Thursday, May 24, 2018 at Staab Funeral Home-Springfield.

Funeral Service: 1 pm, Thursday, May 24, 2018 at St. Anthony Hellenic Orthodox Church with Father George Pyle officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Springfield Public School Foundation.
