Theodore J. Dirksen, 75, of Athens, died at 9:36 am, Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at St. John’s Hospital. He was born May 29, 1941 in Springfield, to Theodore J. and Catherine Reisch Dirksen, Sr.

Survivors include two daughters, Melissa (Bryan) Bateman and Michele Wyness both of Springfield; one son, Theodore J. (Carrie) Dirksen, III of Athens; fourteen grandchildren, Alexander, Jessica, John, Josh, Jake, Jordan, Michael, Mikaela, Tessa, Tyler, Chris, Amaria, Zendaya, Zamaria; four sisters, Cathy (Sandy) Bingham of MI, Martha Bunn of Peoria, Mary (Lindy) Lindberg of MI and Elizabeth Gehr of Chicago; three brothers, Joseph Dirksen and George (Georgia) Dirksen both of Springfield and John (Cindy) Dirksen of Chicago and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and infant brother, Paul Anthony Dirksen.
Theodore worked for A. Dirksen & Sons Furniture Store and retired in 1994 from Illinois Bell Telephone Company after more than thirty years as a Service Technician.

He enjoyed reading and spending summers in Onekama, Michigan, but most of all spending time with his grandchildren.

So sorry to hear about Dirk. My parents just asked if I had heard from him. (Bud and Pat Gollon) They will be very sad to ear about their friend and neighbor.

So many memories of Dirk. While going through all the pictures from the past, those memories were freshened. Mr. Mike, Dirk, and I would always fish together, Dirk on the bow, Mike amidship, and me in the stern. Dirk knew the fishing spots. We shared so many memories. My prayers are for all the Dirksens. I am blessed to be a part of the family.

My deepest sympathy is extended to all the Dirksen family. I have many fond memories of growing up at St Agnes School, playing in Jackson Parkway and in the Dirksen home, The Dirksen' s embraced every kid in the neighborhood. The pool table, the Coke machine, roller skating in the basement, daily rosary, and Sunday night Steak & Shake were all great treats extended to all. May Dirk rest in peace.

I used to see quite a bit of Mr. Dirksen picking up his grandsons at Ball school. He was a kind man who was beaming with pride just talking about his grandchildren. He will be missed. My sincere condolences to Missy, Shelly & Dirk.

My memories of summers in Onekama always include the Dirksen beach and family. As time passed my kids and eventually grandkids spent many a day at Dirk's beach. It was the gathering point. Dirk would pull up his beach chair and make us all feel welcome. "Uncle Dirk" , as my kids called him, will always be remembered with a warm place in our hearts.
