Steven “Steve” Marcel Broccardo, 52, a longtime resident of Springfield, passed away Sunday, December 8, 2013. Steve, owner and operator of Tree Busters, was critically injured in a motor vehicle accident, while delivering firewood, during last weekend’s winter storm.
Steve, born April 18, 1961, is now joining in heaven his mother, Nancy Vespa Broccardo, his paternal grandparents, Cub and Nene Broccardo, and his maternal grandparents, Mike and Irene Vespa. Steve is survived by his father Marcel (wife Terri), his brother, Mark, and his sister, Michele, his children, Gabriella (fiancé Kasey), Dante, and Alexandria, and their mother, Connie. Many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles, and the countless sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, moms, and dads that he adopted and made a part of his own family, also survive him.
Steve was born and raised in Springfield. He graduated from Little Flower Grade School and Griffin High School. He was employed by Tree Busters for the past 25 years, and never took a day off. After Hurricane Katrina, Steve traveled to many areas in the south, including New Orleans to work and help the hurricane victims. Steve adored the free spirit of the city of New Orleans. After a few years, Steve returned to Springfield to be closer to his children.
Steven was, above all, an amazing father. He worked hard every single day of his life, and he enjoyed and lived every single day of his life. When Steve wasn’t working or climbing trees, he loved being with his kids, family, and friends, camping, being outside, and playing softball. He had a passion for sports and was the biggest Cubs, Bears, and Bulls fan. His greatest hobby and skill was smiling, making people laugh, helping out when they needed a favor, and being a wonderful friend. He will be remembered fondly as Dad, Son, Uncle, Brother, ‘Bro’, Friend, The Man, The Myth, The Legend.
We will celebrate Steve’s life with a memorial gathering on Friday, December 13, 2013 from 3–7 p.m. at Staab Funeral Home, with a memorial service at 7:00 pm with Reverend Steven A. Janoski officiating. A private interment will be held at a later date.
Memorial Contributions may be made to the family to assist his children with the funeral expenses.
