Sister M. Renelle Brueggemann, O.S.F. (88) of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis died on Friday, April 1, 2011, at 5:15 p.m. at St. Francis Convent, Springfield, IL.

Sister Renelle, the former Clara Catherine Brueggemann, was born in Aviston, IL, on July 13, 1922, the daughter of Herman and Frieda Lueke Brueggemann. She entered the Congregation on February 2, 1946, and professed her religious vows on October 4, 1948.

Sister Renelle was a graduate of St. John’s Hospital School of Nursing, Quincy University, and Marquette University. She served the community as a nurse at hospitals in Illinois and Wisconsin. She was a nursing instructor at St. John’s Hospital School of Nursing from 1956 to 1957. Sister Renelle served as Secretary to the Board of Directors for hospitals in Illinois and Wisconsin from 1975 to 1978 and Secretary/Treasurer of hospitals in Illinois and Wisconsin at Hospital Sister Health System in Springfield from 1983 to 1989. In addition, she served as a patient visitor at St. Nicholas Hospital, Sheboygan, WI, from 1995 to 2009. She returned to St. Francis Convent in 2009.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Bernard Brueggemann.

She is survived by two sisters, Mary Gartside of Carlyle, IL, and Agatha Richter of Trenton, IL, and a brother, Paul Brueggemann of Smithboro, IL, two nephews, and several cousins, as well as her Franciscan Sisters with whom she shared her life for over 65 years.

Visitation will be held at the St. Francis Convent from 4:00-7:00 PM with a Wake Service at 6:30 PM on Monday, April 4, 2011. The Eucharistic Celebration and Rite of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Andre Schludecker, OFM, on Tuesday, April 5, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. in St. Clare of Assisi Adoration Chapel at the St. Francis Convent. Burial will be in Crucifixion Hill Cemetery.
