Sam P. Sgro of Springfield, died on the 30th day of November, 2012 at the age of 77 years. Sam was born on August 17, 1935 to Peter Sgro and Catherine Giganti Sgro. He married Jeanette Kieffer in 1960 and they were the parents of four children, all of whom survive.
A lifelong Springfield resident, Sam was a builder and real estate developer. He enjoyed life to its fullest and was a friend to many. He collected antique cars, played bridge and loved a good joke. He seemed to have boundless energy and was always doing something, if not two or three things, often helping out someone who needed a hand. He built more than 100 homes, duplexes and apartment buildings in and around Springfield. He also developed the first condominium complex in the area in the 1960’s. He was the last owner and operator of the St. Nicholas Hotel. Sam was truly a self-made man who started out by selling pots and pans door to door.
Above all else, Sam was devoted to his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his sons, Gregory (Leslie) Sgro, Peter (Michelle) Sgro and Steven (Janet) Sgro all of Springfield; a daughter, Catherine (Ron) Boerke of Garnerville, New York and ten grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Mary Frances Gamond, Jim (Carol) Sgro, Gerilyn (William) Virtue, Lori Carlson and Marc Sgro.
The Family will be hosting a memorial service at St. Agnes Church at 11:00 am on Thursday, December 6, 2012.
Memorial Contributions may be made to the Springfield Parks Foundation.
