Salvatore “Sam” Calandrino, 88, of Springfield, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at St. John’s Hospital. He was born April 5, 1926 in Louisville, KY to the late Pasquale and Concetta Aleto-Calandrino. He married the love of his life Mary Catherine Hanauer on February 2, 1945. She passed away June 22, 2013.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, one son Michael Calandrino, his parents, four brothers; one sister and two son-in-laws, Ray Dippel and Stan Thompson.
He was the owner and operator of Sam’s Janitor Service. He also worked as a grounds-man for the State Capitol. Sam retired as a state maintenance employee from Camp Lincoln in 1991. He especially enjoyed working in his yard, wood-working and watching baseball. He was also involved in coaching many baseball teams when his sons were young.
His favorite pastime was spending time with his best friend and wife Mary of 73 wonderful years. He also enjoyed being with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of Little Flower Church.
Survivors include six children; Patricia Dippel, Joseph (Deena) Calandrino, Vicki (John) Reazer-Kremitzki, Cathy Christison, Pamela (fiancé Jon K. Smith) Thompson and Gina (Michael) Dickerson all of Springfield; ten grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation: 5-7 pm, Monday, October 13, 2014 at Staab Funeral Home.
Funeral Service: 11 am, Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at Staab Funeral Home with Rev. John Ossola officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park.
