SPRINGFIELD – Rosella Nadine Smith, 82, of Springfield, died Tuesday, June 19, 2007 at St. John’s Hospice.

She was born January 4, 1925 in Nokomis, IL, the daughter of Reverend James A. and LaVina Myers Ishmael. She married Harold E. Smith on December 19, 1942; he preceded her in death on February 15, 1988. Her parents; one daughter, Judy Lynn Bess Dyer; and one sister, AliceMae Runkles, also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Smith worked in the psychiatric unit of Memorial Hospital until 1969 and retired from McFarland Zone Center in 1983 as an alcoholic counseling specialist. After retirement, she worked in Dr. Lowell Brown’s office for several years. She was a member of Third Presbyterian Church. She held several offices including Past President of the Land of Lincoln Lion’s Club and Past Secretary and Trustee of the Lincoln Land Area Local Postal Auxiliary. She cherished her family and special neighbors, David and Vickie Formea. She enjoyed trips to Las Vegas and dearly loved Elvis.

Survivors: two daughters, Helen Smith and Barbara George, both of Springfield; one son, Ronald (wife, Jackie) Smith of Chatham; six grandchildren, Robert C. Smith, Jill M. (husband, Steve) Giddings, Danny L. Bess, Cindy L. (husband, Paul) Knoles, and William R. (wife, Terri) George, all of Springfield, and Juanita C. (husband, Travis) Bartell of Macomb; seven great-grandchildren, Joseph L. George, Brian A. George, Jake A. Knoles, and William R. George, Jr., all of Springfield, Eric M. Alison M., and Abbie L. Bartell of Macomb, and she was looking forward to the arrival of her latest grandson, Tyler Giddings, in late summer; two nieces, Charlene Runkles of Springfield and Mary Ruth Phillippe of McDonough, GA; and several cousins.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Visitation will be held 4:00-7:00 p.m., Thursday, June 21, 2007. Services: 10:00 a.m., Friday, June 22, 2007, Reverend Brent Mitchell officiating. Burial: Virden Cemetery. Staab Funeral Home of Service.
