Rose Hassler

SPRINGFIELD – Rose Hassler, 88, of Springfield died at 2:25 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, at St. Joseph’s Home.
She was born Oct. 5, 1921, in Mascoutah, the daughter of Jacob and Hedwig Hetty Rauch Toepfer. She married Merle M. Hassler on April 1, 1950; he preceded her in death April 23, 1994. Her parents also preceded her in death.
Rose, a resident of Springfield since 1972, worked for the Red Cross until she was married and devoted her life to her family and was a homemaker.
She was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ and Kings Daughters. She volunteered for the Head Start Program in Colorado. She enjoyed cross stitch, reading, cooking, playing cards, doing crossword puzzles and gardening.
Surviving are two daughters, Diane (Mark) Watson and Susan Martinie, both of Springfield; two sons, Kent M. Hassler of Chicago and Wayne Myles Hassler of Tucker, Ga.; eight grandchildren, Nicole (Ernie) Wolf, Kendra (Brian) Forness, Meghan (Zach) Cumberworth, Alexa, Hayley and Emily Martinie and Tyler and Reed Watson; four great-grandchildren, Miranda, Jessica, Trevor and Ethan; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m., Monday, Nov. 9, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home with the Rev. Brian Damrow officiating. Burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Congregational United Church of Christ or St. Joseph’s Home.
