Rose Elizabeth "Bettie" Gietl

Rose Elizabeth “Bettie” Gietl died March 16 at St. John’s Hospice, Springfield. She was born on Dec. 18, 1923 in Springfield, the daughter of Emil and Rose (Tiemeyer) Sklenka. She married Raymond L. Gietl on Feb. 23, 1946.

A devoted wife and mother of five sons, Mrs. Gietl was an organized and enterprising homemaker and also helped manage her husband’s floor covering business. She also worked as a medical transcriptionist at the SIU School of Medicine, in admitting at St. John’s Hospital and as a clerk at the Sangamon County Recorder of Deeds.

Mrs. Gietl was a charter member of Little Flower Parish, former president of Kappa Chapter, Phi Beta Psi Sorority, a member of the U of I Extension Jerome Homemakers Unit, and a docent at the Old State Capitol. She also enjoyed bridge, gardening and vacationing with her family.
Throughout her life, Mrs. Gietl was warm and social with many friends and a large, extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Raymond (1999), son Charles (2011) and brother, Albert.

She is survived by sons: James R. (Jenny) of Curran, Donald P. (Loy) of Auburn, and Terry L. (Beth) and Ted R. (Sandy) of Springfield. There are five grandchildren: Kira (Paul) Grabowski of Troy, Marc (Venessa) Gietl of Colorado Springs, CO, and Holly Gietl, Heidi (Keith) Vogele, and Meara Gietl, all of Springfield. There are six great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mrs. Gietl is also survived by her brothers Robert C. (Joanne) Sklenka of Mulberry, FL and Raymond J. (Marge) Sklenka of Springfield.

Visitation: 5:00-7:00 p.m. Monday, March 18, 2013 at Staab Funeral Home with a prayer service at 5 p.m.

Funeral Mass: 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at Church of the Little Flower with Monsignor John Ossola officiating.

Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or Church of the Little Flower.
