Roger Eugene Buecker, 89, a lifelong resident of Springfield, died at 8:54 am, Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at his home.

He was born April 21, 1925 in Springfield to Calvin and Martha Hoffe Buecker. He married Peggy Jean Stewart on November 8, 1947 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Springfield and she survives.

Also surviving are his children, Steve Buecker, Stewart (Theresa) Buecker, Penny (Ken) Young, Stan (Nancy) Buecker and Martha (Tom) Richey; grandchildren, Andrea Shryock, Steven (Meaghan) Buecker, Shannon Buecker, Trisha (John) Hibbs, Cathryn Buecker, Clayton Buecker, Nicholas Doerfler, Steven Smith, Christopher Welch, Elisabeth (Caleb) Hoover, Roger (Alison) Buecker, Staci (Barry) Buecker-DeNardo, Thomas (Maggie) Richey, Anna Richey and Benjamin Richey; great grandchildren, Taelor and Bryson Shryock, Henry, Claire, Jack and Magdalyn Buecker, Quentin Hibbs, Logan Doerfler, Satch and Hodge Buecker, Nicholas DeNardo, Emmett and Harrison Richey and Trenton and Kylie VanMeter and two sisters, Wilma Scaife and Jeanette (Bill) Maurer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother and wife, Ralph and Grace Buecker; sister and husband, Alice and Frank Krell and brother-in-law, Bud Scaife.
Roger started grade school in a one room school and graduated from Lanphier High School.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 thru 1946 aboard the LST-652 in the Pacific. His ship was waiting to invade Japan when President Truman ordered the atomic bomb to be dropped on Hiroshima.

Upon returning from service he worked at the Northside Food Shop. He entered the plumber’s apprenticeship and received his 60 year membership in Plumbers and Fitters Local 137 and served as Business Agent. He retired from the Secretary of State Physical Services as Supervisor for the plumbers in 1990.

He was a 60 year member of Plumber & Steam Fitter’s Local 137; 50 year member with the Masonic Temple Tyrian lodge #333; a member of Ansar Shriners and longtime member of Elliott Avenue Baptist Church. He served as Precinct Committeeman in Springfield Township.

Roger played football and boxed at Lanphier High School. He played on the only undefeated football team at Lanphier in 1943 and was honored, together with his classmates, at the Springfield Sports Hall of Fame Banquet in 2005. He coached his sons’ little league baseball teams and supported his children and grandchildren in their sports and other endeavors. Roger enjoyed camping with family and friends throughout the United States and Canada. His favorite camping spots were the beautiful State Parks of Florida and the mountains of Colorado. He enjoyed family get togethers at his home, which he built in 1955 and he greatly enjoyed taking long walks with Peggy.

Visitation: 9-11 am, Saturday, April 4, 2015 at Elliot Avenue Baptist Church.

Funeral Service: 11 am, Saturday, April 4, 2015 at Elliot Avenue Baptist Church.

Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the Sangamon County Inter-Veterans Burial Detail and the U.S. Navy.

Memorial contributions may be made to Elliot Avenue Baptist Church.
