Roger A. “Dawg” Hermes, Jr., 65, of Springfield, died at 10:17 am, Monday, October 20, 2014 at Memorial Medical Center. He was born September 18, 1949 in Red Bud, IL, to Roger and Mary Rogers Hermes, Sr.
Survivors include one daughter, Mariah Hermes of Springfield; two sons, Ryan (Janelle) Hermes of East Lansing, MI and Joshua Hermes of Champaign; one granddaughter, Julia Hermes; two sisters, Pam Moberly and Diana (David) King both of Springfield; one brother, Robert Hermes of Springfield; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins and he loyal canine companion, Coady.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Roger was a US Navy Vietnam Veteran. He retired from the State of Illinois Department of Corrections and had previously served as Police Chief in Illiopolis and Athens. He was a dedicated member and volunteer of the Illinois Police Officer Memorial organization and of the Masonic Lodge.
Visitation: 5-7 pm, Thursday, October 23, 2014 at Staab Funeral Home.
Funeral Service: 12 Noon, Friday, October 24, 2014 at Staab Funeral Home with Pastor Dave Fox officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Illinois Police Officers Memorial Fund.
