Robert Floyd Appleman, 88, of Springfield, died at 12:10 am, Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at St. John’s Hospital. He was born August 23, 1928 in Valley Township, PA, to Frank A. and Ada Conway Appleman. He married Dona O. Hughes on September 13, 1952 and she survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Kathy (David) Bradford of Springfield and Pastor Debbie Hopwood of Matamoros, Mexico; one son, Bob Appleman of Riverton; five grandchildren, Mathew (Julia) Gromer, Kevin (Anna) and Joseph (Brittany) Bradford and Justin and Amy Hopwood and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Susan Gromer; one son-in-law, Stan Hopwood; two brothers, Edward and Harold Appleman and four sisters, Ruth Hilner, Mildred Snyder, Laura Reinmiller and Frances Shaulis.
Mr. Appleman was a US Army Air Force Veteran serving during WWII. He received his bachelor’s degree from Tri State University and received his master’s degree from University of Illinois. He retired in 1989 as a Civil Engineer from the Bureau of Construction Department of Transportation for the State of Illinois.
He was a member of Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church. He enjoyed woodworking, was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a volunteer at the Adams Wildlife Sanctuary, Illinois Audubon Society, a master gardener with the University of Illinois Extension Service, and Meals-On-Wheels.
Visitation: 4-7 pm, Friday, November 4, 2016 at Staab Funeral Home-Springfield.
Funeral Service: 11 am, Saturday, November 5, 2016 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield with Reverend Paul Schwartzkopf officiating.
Burial will follow at Rochester Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.
