SPRINGFIELD – Robert E. Doerfler, 83, of Springfield, died at 10:20 p.m. Sunday, July 5, 2009, at St. John’s Hospice.
He was born Feb. 7, 1926, in Springfield, the son of Fred and Pauline Smelter Doerfler. He married Wanda M. Myers on Aug. 31, 1946; she preceded him in death on Dec. 11, 2005.
He also was preceded in death by his parents; a son, David M. Doerfler; a daughter, Pamela K. Parker; and a brother, Gene Doerfler.
He is survived by a son, Gregory L. (Kathy) Doerfler of Springfield; two grandsons, Nicholas and Joseph; a sister, Mae Chambers of Hannibal, Mo.; two brothers, George (Barbara) Doerfler and James (Rita) Doerfler, both of Springfield; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Robert was a lifelong resident of Springfield. He worked as a tool engineer at Allis Chalmers/Fiat Allis, and was also self-employed as engineer. He also worked at the Sears, Roebuck and Co. warehouse for 25 years.
Robert was a member of the United States Army serving during World War II. He enjoyed woodworking.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 8, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at
11 a.m. Thursday, July 9, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home, with the Rev. Frank Lewis officiating. Burial will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where the Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail will conduct military honors.
