Robert “Bob” Lee Lechner, also known as “Polk”, 93, passed away at his home, October 17, 2022 with family by his side. Bob was born to Anton and Mildred Lechner on July 26, 1929 in Virden. He married Mary Lou Dunlap on December 14, 1952 and she preceded him in death on June 1, 1999.
Bob is survived by his brother, Tony (Velma) Lechner of Edwardsville, IL; son, Michael (Dondi) Lechner of Virden; Daughter, Ruth Ann (Roger) Stewart also, of Virden; Companion, Dollie McCue; seven grandchildren, Jarod, Jason, Justin, Ryan, Suzanne, Jenna and Gracie; ten great grandchildren and one on the way and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife and former companion, Geraldine Walls.
Bob proudly served his country, two terms, in the United States Navy during the Korean War serving on the USS Hugh Purvis and the USS Owens.
He was a Mason and a member of Virden American Legion.
His favorite pastime was golfing and playing cards with the guys. In his earlier years he enjoyed traveling. He was a hardcore St. Louis Cardinals Fan and loved watching the Illini play.
He worked as a School Supply Salesman and was a Manager for Fanco in Divernon.
At Bob’s request, cremation will be accorded followed by a graveside service at 11 am, Saturday, October 22, 2022 at Virden Cemetery with Pastor Brennan Hurley officiating. Military honors will be conducted.
