SPRINGFIELD – Richard P. Dick Staab, 77, of Springfield died at 2:25 a.m. Thursday, July 9, 2009, at St. John’s Hospice.
He was born Jan. 18, 1932, in Springfield, the son of Carl H. and Helen Metzger Staab. He married Stella M. Ciccone on April 30, 1955.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Dorothy Louise Staab; two brothers, William Staab and James Staab; and a brother-in-law, Joseph Sullivan.
He is survived by his wife, Stella M. Staab of Springfield; two daughters, Christina M. Staab and Susan M. Staab, both of Springfield; two sons, Richard G. Staab of Springfield and Karl G. (Mary) Staab of Edinburg; three grandsons, Tyler, Tony and Travis, all of Edinburg; a sister, Helen F. Sullivan of Springfield; two brothers, John Jay (Judy) Staab of Tucson, Ariz. and Paul Staab of New Orleans; two sisters-in-law, Betty Staab of Springfield and Nancy Staab of Monroe, La.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Dick was a lifelong resident of Springfield. He worked at U.S. Postal Service for over 42 years before retiring in various capacities, including postmaster of several cities. He was also employed by state of Illinois and Waggner Office Systems.
He was a member of St. Katherine Drexel Parish at Sacred Heart Church. He graduated from Cathedral Boys High School and Springfield College in Illinois. He was also a member of several church boards at St. James Parish in Riverton and served as past president of Oak Hill School Board.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, July 13, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home. Funeral mass will be held at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 14, 2009, at Sacred Heart Church, with the Rev. Peter Harman officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.
