Richard L. Cary, 70, of Springfield died at 6:07 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, 2008, at St. John’s Hospital. He was born Oct. 28, 1937, in Springfield, the son of James Leroy Cary and Clara Louise Fifield Cary Unthank. He married Joan Matheny on Oct. 24, 1981. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Carrol, Robert Bob and Charles Cary; and a sister, Marcella Alinger.
He is survived by his wife, Joanie Matheny Cary of Springfield; a daughter, Wendy Elmore of Athens; three grandchildren, Taylor, Megan and Zach Elmore, all of Athens; three sisters, Wilma (James) Goss of Bristow, Okla., Shirley Steller of Chatham and Joyce McCaw of Dixon; two brothers, Thomas and Clarence Unthank, both of Springfield; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was a lifelong resident of Springfield. He worked in guest services for Hilton Springfield and was former owner and operator of Gold-N-Glow Donut Shop.
He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, lifetime member AMVETS and Calvary Temple Christian Center.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, 2008, at Staab Funeral Home. Lie in state will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008, at Calvary Temple Christian Center, followed by funeral services, with Pastor Mark Johnson officiating.
Burial will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery, where the Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail will conduct military honors.
