Reverend John Franklin Smith, 90 of Springfield, died at 12:20 pm, Wednesday, August 5, 2020. He was born September 8, 1929 in Wood River, Illinois to Leonard Hugh and Lucy G. (Phipps) Smith. He married Esther E. Haworth on August 7, 1953 and she survives.

Also surviving are five children, J. Michael (Jie Wu) Smith of Urbana, Jim Smith of Springfield, J. Steven (Linda) Smith of Springfield, Jay Smith of Melrose, IA and Debbie Gomez of Rockford; sixteen grandchildren; twenty-three Great Grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Betty Ellis and Lenora File.

Rev. Smith was a United States Army veteran serving during the Korean War. He was a member of General Douglas MacArthur’s Honor Guard.

He was a Minister of Northern Illinois United Methodist Conference and affiliated with Laurel United Methodist Church in Springfield. He served churches in Northern Illinois from 1956 – 1994 and was active in the United Methodist Marriage Encounter serving on the National Board.

He served on the State Board of the American Lung Association for many years and was a volunteer at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum. John also enjoyed traveling, reading, and music.

Private services will be held at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, Rev. Smith’s family plans to have a Celebration of Life at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cunningham Children’s Home, 1301 N Cunningham Ave, Urbana, IL 61802, the Midwest Mission Distribution Center, 1001 Mission Dr., Pawnee, IL 62558 or a charity of the donor’s choice.
