Reverend John C. Sullivan, O.F.M., 84 died in home hospice care at the Motherhouse on Monday, November 7, 2016. He was born August 25, 1932 in St. Louis, MO, the son of John C. and Florence (Bene’) Sullivan.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his older brother, Raymond and Raymond’s wife, June.
He is survived by two sisters, in the St. Louis area, Sr. Charline Sullivan, CSJ and Audrey Sullivan; several nieces; one nephew, several great nieces, nephews, aunts, cousins and friends.
Fr. John was a member of the Franciscan Province of the Sacred Heart, St. Louis, MO. He entered the Franciscan Order in 1952 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1959. After ordination, Fr. John studied mathematics and physics at Catholic University and Notre Dame, and taught physics and electronics for ten years at Padua Franciscan High School in Parma, OH. Following teaching, Fr. John was in parish ministry for eighteen years, serving parishes in Quincy, IL, Indianapolis, IN, St. Louis, MO and Calhoun County, IL. He served his order as Vicar Provincial from 1987-1993 with a short period of time as interim Provincial Minister in 1991. Fr. John served as a Spiritual Assistant for the Secular Franciscans for over fifteen years. His hobbies include oil painting and wood-burning art.
Wake Service: 6:30 pm, Thursday, November 10, 2016 at the Franciscan Motherhouse.
Visitation: 9-10 am Friday, November 11, 2016 at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 3140 Meramec Street, St. Louis, MO.
Funeral Mass: 10 am, Friday, November 11, 2016 at St. Anthony of Padua Church. Burial will follow at SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery.
