SPRINGFIELD – Rene Chevalier, 85, a resident of Springfield since 1944, died at 1:11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, 2007, at Memorial Medical Center.
He was born in Stonington and was raised in Auburn, the son of Bara and Julian Gedon Chevalier. He married Julianna Kohlrus April 19, 1944; she preceded him in death Nov. 27, 1992.
Also preceding him in death were his parents; a son, Randy Chevalier; a brother, Bara Chevalier; two sisters, Olympe Macari and Carmen Filliponi; and a grandson, Brendan Chevalier.
Mr. Chevalier was a coal miner for 15 years. He worked for Laborers Local 477 as a plaster tender, retiring after more than 30 years.
He was a member of St. Cabrini Church, Knights of Columbus Council 4175, VFW Post 8157 in Auburn and Laborers Local 477.
He also was an avid fisherman. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II.
Surviving are a daughter, Renee Chevalier of Springfield; a daughter-in-law, Jane Chevalier of Springfield; four sons, Danny L. (Mary Anne) of Springfield, Terry A. (Bonnie) of Divernon, Ricky J. (Diane) of Langleyville and Rodney B. (Lisa) of Carlinville; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; longtime friends, Kay McCain and Sheryl Dyer; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial gathering will be held from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2007, at St. Cabrini Church. Funeral Mass will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2007, at St. Cabrini Church, with the Rev. Richard Chiola officiating. Burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery, where the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County will conduct military honors.
The family requests that memorials by made to St. Cabrini Church.
