Raymond Walter Hickman, 88, of Springfield died at 7:40 pm on Thursday, January 9, 2014 at his home. He was born on August 11, 1925 in Springfield to Raymond Walter and Grace Marie Bryant Hickman, Sr. His parents and one brother, Donald Hickman preceded him in death. He married Bette J. Moore in 1947 and she survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Ronald J. Hickman of Sherman, Raymond Walter (Mona) Hickman III of Springfield and Lyle F. (Tracy) Hickman of Riverton; nine grandchildren; four great grandchildren; two sisters, Gloria (Jim) Marshall and Karen (John) Frederick, both of Topeka, IL; one brother Richard Hickman of Athens, IL and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Walter was a member of St. Aloysius Church. Mr. Hickman was a United States Navy Veteran serving during World War II aboard the USS LSM 219. He received several commendations including the Philippine Liberation Medal and Philippine Liberation Ribbon (1 Star), American Area Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal (2 Stars). He was a founding member of the VFW Post 10302. He was a resident of Springfield all of his life. He retired from Fiat Allis after 32 years.
Graveside Service: 2:00 pm Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at Camp Butler National Cemetery with Deacon Ben Hoefler officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail and the United States Navy.
