SPRINGFIELD – Raymond J. Smith, 81, of Springfield died Friday, Jan. 2, 2009, at Memorial Medical Center.
Raymond was born Oct. 3, 1927, in Rochester, the son of Roy J. and Vivian Bell Smith. He married Rebecca Coffey on April 18, 1975.
He lived in Springfield most of his life. He also lived in Portland, Ore., where he was a police officer for 10 years. He owned and operated a local towing company and auto dealerships in Springfield. He then worked for Armored Car Services and was a security guard for numerous local businesses. He was a past member of the Illinois Police Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother-in-law, Rolland Coffey; and a sister-in-law, Mary Louise Ramsey.
He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Smith of Springfield; a daughter, Jill (Fred) Grover of Springfield; two sons, Joshua Bales of Springfield and Travis (Beth) Smith of Decatur; nine grandchildren, Ferrin, Bruce and Eric Colvin, Alexis Grover, Britney and Alex Smith, Courtney Werries, Jolie Robertson-Smith and Sammuel Bales; a great-granddaughter, Brooklynn Colvin; five sisters-in-law, Janet Branyan, Carolyn (Bill) Scroggins, Diane Grobosky, Barb (Don) Vespa and Melissa (Kevin) Mariconi; five brothers-in-law, Paul (Brenda), Keith, Mel (Barbara), Nate (Cathy) and Rich (Jamie) Coffey; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home, followed by the funeral service at 1 p.m., with Pastor Bruce King officiating. Burial will be in Rochester Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family of Raymond J. Smith.
