SPRINGFIELD – Peter J. Salvo, 76, of Springfield died at 8:53 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008, at St. John’s Hospital.
He was born March 19, 1932, in Springfield, the son of Vincent and Lily Scibona Salvo. He married Rose Ann Cipriano on June 23, 1957.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Salvo was a resident of Springfield all of his life. He was co-owner of the Platter until 1981. He owned Quality Furniture until 1978 and Salvo Distributing until 1983. He worked and retired from the state of Illinois, where he was employed by the Department of Corrections from Feb. 1, 1988, until retiring on Dec. 31, 1991.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving from 1951 to 1955. He was a member of Christ the King Church, Knights of Columbus and the Roman Cultural Society, where he was past president and a founding father. He assisted for many years with the Griffin Mostaciolli Dinner and bingo. He was a past member of the Italian American War Veterans Association, Elks Club and American Legion. He loved his sports, his family and enjoyed cooking, traveling and hunting. He was a softball coach and manager for 25 years, managing Quality Furniture’s men’s softball team, winning many city titles and the state title in 1973. A few of his teams played for national titles. The 1973 team was inducted into the Springfield Sports Hall of Fame in 2003. He coached Khoury League girls fast pitch softball, ages 5-16, for seven years and was a Khoury League umpire for seven years. Peter was inducted into the Springfield Sports Hall of Fame in 1996 and the Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame in 1985. He never met a stranger and had a heart of gold.
Surviving are his wife, Rose of Springfield;
three daughters, Carla (husband, Patrick) Sheehan, Madelaine (husband, Steve) Aherin and Roseanne (husband, John) McNamara, all of Springfield; a son, Vince Peter (wife, Kellie) Salvo of Springfield; 13 grandchildren, Peter (wife, Nicole), Catie, Willie, Patrick, Adrienne, Mary, Gabrielle, Neal, Kelcie, Nolan, Peter, Olivia and Mikaila; a great-granddaughter, Caroline; a brother, Charles P. (wife, Frances) Salvo of Springfield; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9, 2008, at Christ the King Church, where a prayer service will be held at 3 p.m.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 10, 2008, at Christ the King Church with Monsignor John Ossola officiating.
Burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County and the U.S. Air Force.
