Sister Peter Damian Chiang (87), of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis, died on Thursday, January 6, 2011, at 11:50 a.m. at St. Francis Convent, Springfield, Illinois.
Sister Peter Damian, the former Ching Mei Chiang, was born in Hwimin, China, on June 29, 1923, the daughter of Joseph and Teresa Chiang. She entered the Congregation on October 4, 1947, and professed her religious vows on October 4, 1950.
Sister Peter Damian served the community in hospitals in Illinois and Wisconsin. She served as a missionary at Star of the Sea Clinic in Taiwan from 1976 through 1983. From 1984 through 2002, she was an EKG Technician at St. John’s Hospital.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Mark Chiang and Reverend Sebastian Chiang.
She is survived by a great nephew, Father Joseph Jiang of St. Louis, MO, and her Franciscan Sisters with whom she shared her life for over 63 years.
Visitation will be held at St. Francis Convent on Friday, January 7, 2011, from 4:00-7:00 PM, with a Wake Service at 6:30 PM. The Eucharistic Celebration and Rite of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Vincent Callahan, OFM, on Saturday, January 8, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Clare of Assisi Adoration Chapel at St. Francis Convent. Burial will be in Crucifixion Hill Cemetery.
