Paul A. Lanier

June 22, 1985 - January 24, 2020

Paul A. Lanier, 34, of Springfield died on Friday, January 24, 2020 at Memorial Medical Center. He was born on June 22, 1985 in Dayton, OH.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Susan Maxwell and his uncle, Dave Maxwell.

At the age of 8, Paul single-handedly fended off 2 persistent robbers for an extended period with the use of some very clever, yet fairly horrific, tricks and traps.
After being unexpectedly released by the Green Bay Packers in 2005 when they decided to change course and draft Aaron Rodgers, he took his talents a little further south and signed a minor league contract with the Chicago Cubs. However, in only his first season, while putting up HOF numbers, he hit a bird with a line-drive and was so-moved to shift his focus from sports and enter the little-known field of bird law. To that end, he quickly acquired his Juris Doctor with a focus on bird law and other various lawyerings.

Finding some free-time in his new profession he began writing music for John Mayer leading to 8 Grammys and 11 more nominations. Not content to rest on his laurels just yet, Paul became the 3-time pinewood derby champion of the greater Scranton area from 2015-2017. More recently, he had been very busy as both the charter and sole member of the Obama 2020 presidential campaign.

As you read this, you can tell Paul liked to joke. In all seriousness, Paul was successful in a great deal of ways and worked extremely hard on his education. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from Western Illinois University and received his Juris Doctor Degree from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.
Paul could always put a smile on your face, especially when he would speak with a “Paul-ism”. He enjoyed life to its fullest and he will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Paul is survived by the love of his life, Amanda Long and her daughter, Addison Long, both of Springfield; four brothers, Dusty Zuhlke, Tyler, Jacob and Nathan Tripp, all of Springfield; step-dog and napping pal Addy; chosen parents, Dan and Carol Long, Mark and Barbara Tripp, Jerry and Cindy Naughton of Springfield and too many friends to count.
