Patrick E. Shields

July 19, 1940 - June 23, 2018

Patrick “Pat” E. Shields, 77, of Springfield, IL, lost his battle with cancer on June 23, 2018, where he was surrounded by his family at St. John’s Hospital. He was born on July 19, 1940 in Decatur, IL.

Pat was a passionate and modest man who enjoyed gardening, bonsai trees, talking with friends and strangers. He shared this same passion with his wife, Salli, whom he married on June 14, 1996. If you knew Pat and Salli, you have seen their yard and garden. They were always teased to have the best looking alley in Springfield. He loved HGTV and any show about animals. Pat would be the first to lend a hand or give advice. He was an amazing Father and great Dad!! Pat was an outgoing man who loved to have garage sales and talk to everyone that came up to look. He was always loving, supportive, and very proud of his children, Angela Huddle, husband Steve, Joseph Shields, Jack Love, his wife Kathy, and Shari (Love) Beahringer, her husband Donald. His grandchildren always made his eyes light up. His three granddaughters, Samantha Stengel, Krysla Beahringer, and Abigail Shields were wrapped around his little finger. His three grandsons, Matthew Konrad, Nicholas Shields, and Ryan Huddle made him very proud. Pat had a lot of friends in his life, but Dave Dobson, who reconnected with Pat and reminded him that people other than his family cared for him. Pat also had another “child” that cannot go without being mentioned, his precious cat, Sadie Boy, who he talked with and loved with his whole heart. He even had allergy shots every month so that Sadie Boy could stay in the house.

He missed his brother Thomas Shields and mother Susan Shields, his mother-in-law, Bertha Pope, as they left this world before he did.

Pat retired from Illinois Bell where he worked as a lineman for over 29 years, prior to that he served in Vietnam from 1963-1965 in the United States Army as the dreaded MP, Military Police. He graduated from Mt. Zion High School in 1958. One of Pat’s proudest achievements was the accomplishment of Eagle Scout.
