Orfa Magdalena Contreras Fuentealba

June 25, 1928 - November 21, 2020

Orfa Magdalena Contreras Fuentealba, 92, of Springfield passed away Saturday, November 21, 2020 at Memorial Medical Center. She was born June 25, 1928 in Los Sauces, Chile to Carlos and Maria Isabel Fuentealba Contreras. She married Ervaldo Mellado in Chile and he preceded her in death on November 20, 1990.

Also preceding her in death are her parents, three brothers, and two sisters.

Surviving family members include seven children, Carlos, spouse Anabella, Mellado (children, Carla and Veronica), Maria, spouse Sergio Beltran, Mellado (children, Yarela and Fredy), Victor, spouse Yamile Pino, Mellado (children, Victor Miguel and Yazmin), Ana Rosa, spouse Jose Tomas Bravo, Mellado, Bernardita Mellado (children, Patricia, Francisco, and Catalina), Robert, spouse Maria Ignacia, Mellado (Robert’s children, Robert Adrian, Mariel, and Roman), and Orfa Ivette Mellado (children, Manuel Ignacio and María Jesús); and eight great-grandchildren, Alexander, Valentina, Felix, Diego, Valeria, Agustin, Lucia and Amatista.

Orfa Magdalena resided in both, Chile and the United States, for many years helping to raise her family as a homemaker. She formally obtained her citizenship in the United States on November 3, 2006.

She was of the Catholic Faith and worshipped at St. Katharine Drexel Parish in Springfield.

Her passion was spending time with her family, teaching them how to cook, passing along long-held secret family recipes and cooking large meals for family celebrations. She loved her Chilean empanadas and savoring a rich glass of Chilean red wine. She was an avid gardener who grew all types of vegetables and had a fondness for flowers. When she wasn’t cooking or gardening she was active in social clubs in Cañete, Chile, gifted in embroidery, textile painting mediums and knitting. She was known to everyone, relative, friend or acquaintance, simply as “Abuelita” (an endearing term for grandmother), as she knew just how to take care of everyone. She always had advice and a proper sense of humor, opening her house to anyone who wanted to visit. Her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren loved to hear her many stories from the past and proverbs about life that she loved to tell. Now those proverbs are being carried on and are a part of the future generations vocabulary. She was the matriarch of the Contreras Mellado family, raising seven wonderful, productive and professional children, who have carried on the multitude of traditions, family morals, values and love to their own children which she had taught them. There is no one that could replace or match her, as she was the very embodiment of what a friend, neighbor, sister, aunt, mother, grandmother and matriarch should be. Please honor her by remembering the importance of always taking care of your family and loved ones, as the love of a family is life’s greatest blessing. Home is simply where the family is.

Cremation will be accorded by Staab Funeral Home – Springfield with a private ceremony with immediate family and burial to follow at a later date in Renaico, Chile.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that you please make a donation to her favorite charity in Chile, Hogar de Cristo, or because she was a mother to many, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in the United States.
