Nick J. Fanale
RIVERTON – Nick J. Fanale, 90, of Riverton, died Monday, July 16, 2007 at St. John’s Hospice.
He was born October 13, 1916 in Riverton, IL, the son of John Marco and Elizabeth DeMarco Fanale. He married Katherine Saner on May 29, 1938; she preceded him in death on July 5, 2003. His parents; two sisters, Anna M. Pambianco and Mary Viola; and one brother, John J. Fanale, also preceded him in death.
Nick was of the Catholic faith and was a member of St. James Church in Riverton. He was a very civic minded and involved in many organizations. He served as President of the Riverton Elementary School. He was on the Village Board of Riverton and later became Mayor and was instrumental in bringing natural gas to the Village. He purchased the first set of street signs for Riverton with his village pay. He was very involved in the Riverton Fire Department, first serving as Assistant Chief and later as Chief for more than 25 years. He was one of the founding directors of the Riverton Community Bank, where he served as board member, Chairman of the Board, and President. He was also one of the founding directors of the Elkhart Community Bank in Elkhart, IL. He was involved in organizing the Riverton Knights of Columbus, where he served as member and also as Grand Knight. He was one of the charter members of the Riverton Athletic Club. In his early years, he was employed by Butternut Bakeries. During WWII, he was employed as a supervisor at the Ordinance Plant in Illiopolis, IL. He was also co-owner of the Talk of the Town, a tavern and supper club in Riverton. When his father passed away in 1947, he took over his father’s grocery store. In 1958, he built a large modern supermarket, The Park ‘n Shop Red Fox in Riverton. He owned and operated the supermarket for 31 years until his retirement in 1989. His favorite and only hobby was working.
Survivors: two daughters, Rita M. Ashton and Kay Ann Becker, both of Riverton; one son, Nicholas (wife, Donna) Fanale of Riverton; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Visitation will be held 4:00-7:00 p.m., Thursday, July 19, 2007. Services: 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 20, 2007 at St. James Church in Riverton, Reverend Joseph G. Ring officiating. Burial: Calvary Cemetery. Staab Funeral Home of Service.
