Nelson P. Graves, Sr., 72, of Springfield, passed away peacefully at 12:10 p.m., Sunday, October 3, 2010 at St. John’s Hospice surrounded by his loving family and after the reading of the 23rd Psalm. He was born June 30, 1938 in Springfield to John H. and Anne S. Woolever Graves. He married Phyllis Todd on January 25, 1958 and she preceded him in death on July 7, 2002. He was also preceded in death by his parents, one son Nelson Graves, Jr. and nine brothers.
He is survived by one daughter Charlotte (Bob) Bolton, Jr. of Benld, Illinois, three grandchildren: B.R. (Nichole) Bolton and Wyatt and Cole Graves; several nieces, nephews and cousins and several great and great great nieces and nephews.
Nelson, who was a lifelong resident of Springfield, worked as an Operating Engineer for the Springfield Street Department Sewer Division for 22 years and was a member of the Operating Engineers Local 965. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving from 1958-1960. He was an avid woodworker and enjoyed building birdhouses. Nelson loved spending time with his family and formerly enjoyed fishing.
Visitation: 5-7 pm, Tuesday, October 5, 2010 at Staab Funeral Home.
Funeral Service: 10 am, Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at Staab Funeral Home with Pastor Steven Friese officiating. Burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery where Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail will conduct military honors.
Memorial Contributions may be made to Gillespie United Methodist Church Harvest Feast or St. John’s Hospice.
