SPRINGFIELD – Nellie M. Janssen, 87, of Springfield died at 4 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010, at Lewis Memorial Christian Village.
She was born April 28, 1922, in Springfield, the daughter of Benjamin and Anna A. Noonan Freligh. She married Harmon R. Janssen on Feb. 27, 1943; he preceded her in death on March 6, 1967.
She was preceded in death parents; husband; three sisters, Dorothy Wyatt, Beatrice Bosie and Margaret Freligh; two brothers, Frederick Lee and Henry Freligh; and a daughter-in-law, Santa Janssen.
She is survived by a daughter, Anna Marie Janssen of Springfield; three sons, Harmon G. (Patricia) Janssen, Thomas Henry Janssen and Harold Richard (Kim) Janssen, all of Springfield; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Anna Mae (Marshall) Handshy and Mildred (Stanley) Shimkus, both of Springfield; a brother, Benjamin Freligh of Buffalo; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Nellie was a lifelong resident of the Springfield area. She retired as a clerk with the Illinois Secretary of State, with over 30 years of service. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, at Grace Lutheran Church. Nellie’s body will lie in state from 10 a.m. until the time of funeral services at 11 a.m. Monday, March 1, 2010, at Grace Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Thomas B. Christell and Reverend Juli Lejman-Guy officiating. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
