Murrel Dean Stephens, 63, of Springfield, IL died at 11:11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 8, 2015 at his home. The world lost, and heaven gained the most loving, courageous, selfless, caring, generous, most perfect dad, brother, uncle, son, pop-pop and husband that ever lived. He is no longer suffering. He was born on September 6, 1952 in Canton, IL to William Samuel and Clarice Taylor Squires Stephens, Sr. He was married to Linda Biesenthal on September 29, 1973 and she survives.

Survivors also include his three daughters, Courtney, Megan and Abigail Stephens all of Springfield; three grandsons, Matthew Stephens, Kaden Dougherty and Elijah Stephens; three sisters, Wanda Saccaro, Betsy Kramzar and Rebecca Knoles all of Springfield; five brothers, Chet (Billie) of Berwick, Don (Carole) of Mulberry, FL, William, Jr. (Georgine) of Springfield, Kenny of Jacksonville, TX and Greg (Kim) of Dawson; brother-in-law, Marc Kinzora of Springfield and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Murrel was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, June Swallows and Joyce Smith; a sister-in-law, Donna Kinzora and his dog, Murphee.

He was a United States Army Veteran serving in Vietnam and received the Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze stars. He retired as a Captain from the Springfield Fire Department after 20 years of service and was named Firefighter of the year in 2007. He also owned and operated Stephens Brothers Painting and Paper Hanging.
Murrel was a member of the Firefighters-Postal Lake Club and VFW. He loved golfing, restoring trucks, jeeps and motorcycles, whitewater rafting, camping, playing poker and fireworks but his greatest love, was his family.

Visitation: 4-7 pm, Monday, September 14, 2015 at Staab Funeral Home with the Springfield Fire Department walk through at 6 pm.

Funeral Service: 11 am Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at Staab Funeral Home with Chaplin John Nelson officiating.

Interment will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail.
