Michael J. Metzger, 84, of Springfield, died at 6:20 am, Friday, November 24, 2017 at St. John’s Hospital. He was born January 28, 1933 in Chicago to Walter J. and Harriet E. Henry Metzger. He married Helen C. Lidinsky on September 22, 1962 and she preceded him in death on February 5, 2017.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; one son, Thomas John Metzger; one brother, Bert L. Metzger and one sister, Nancy Lutz.

Survivors include two sons, Michael J. (Ramona) Metzger, Jr. of Springfield and Walter J. (Karen) Metzger of Livermoore, CA; four grandchildren, Nicholas and Brooke Metzger of Springfield and Janie and Megan Metzger of California and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Michael was a United States Air Force Veteran serving as a Staff Sergeant during the Korean War. He graduated from Loyola University in Chicago with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce. He was employed as an independent insurance agent from 1959-2003 and currently was working at Penny Lane Gifts. He was a member of Christ the King Church.

He was Past Exalted Ruler of Elks #158, Past District Deputy and Grand Exalted Ruler of Elks Grand Lodge, Honorary Life Member and Past Worthy President of Eagles 437 and lifetime member. He was a member of American Legion Post 32 and Honorary Life Member of Knights of Columbus 4175 3rd Degree and also 4th Degree.

Graveside Service: 1:00 pm, Friday, December 1, 2017 at Camp Butler National Cemetery with Deacon Al Laabs officiating. The Elk’s Lodge to have a service and the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County and United States Air Force will conduct military honors.
