Michael Bernard Burns, 83, of Springfield, IL died at 9:55 a.m. on Friday, July 1, 2011 at St. John’s Hospital. He was born on August 25, 1927 in Springfield to Michael and Anna Kopjo Burns. He married Margaret Mary Groesch on September 3, 1950 and she survives.
Also surviving Michael are his two sons, James P. (Mary Ann Wolfe) Burns of Linn, MO and Richard (Andrea) Burns of Port Orange, FL; two daughters, Ruth (Joseph) Donelan of Fair Hope, AK and Jean (James) Allen of Rochester; 16 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; five sisters, Margie Ann (Elmer) Jorgensen of Springfield, Rose (Bill) Hergenrother of Pleasant Plains, Betty Hardin of Springfield, Mary Ellen Vetter of Minneapolis, MN, and Frannie Hopper of Springfield and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Michael is preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Michael and Patrick; one brother, Robert and one grandson, Jamey
Mr. Burns attended St. Aloysius and St. Joseph’s grade schools and graduated from Cathedral Boys High School, Springfield Junior College and St. Louis University. He was a member of St. Aloysius Church, and was an active member of the Knights of Columbus for over 50 years. He was active in forming the Father Burtle Knights of Columbus Council #4175, located on the North end of Springfield and served as the Financial Secretary for 26 years and the Grand Knight for two years. He was also a 4th degree member of the Bishop Griffin Assembly and a member of the K of C Hall of Fame. He was a United States Navy Veteran serving during WWII and the Korean Conflict. He sang in church choirs, St. Joe’s Sunshine Minstrels, and was a longtime member of the Land of Lincoln Barbershop Chorus. He attended many state and national conventions with the Barbershop chorus.
Mr. Burns was president of M. Burns and Son, Inc., a petroleum products company.
Visitation: 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at Staab Funeral Home with a prayer services at 4 p.m.
Memorial Mass: 10 a.m. Thursday, July 7, 2011 at St. Aloysius Church with Reverend Tom Donovan officiating. Private family burial will be held at Calvary Cemetery at a later date.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
