DECATUR – Michael A. Harlow, 54, of Decatur, previously of Springfield, died at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009, at his residence.
He was born February 11, 1955, in Chicago, the son of Jerald and JoAnn Herron Harlow.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
Mr. Harlow was a mental health nurse at St. John’s Hospital, Memorial Medical Center and Doctor’s Hospital and was a home healthcare giver for 30 years.
He did his internship in funeral service at McDonald Funeral Home in Rock Falls and completed Mortuary School at Carl Sandburg in Galesburg. Mike’s love of family and friends was unconditional. There wasn’t a better example of selflessness than what Michael lived daily. He believed his purpose in life was to take care of others and nobody did it better.
Surviving are his partner, Robert M. Shelley of Decatur; lifelong friend, John Koehne of Decatur; parents, Jerald and JoAnn Herron Harlow of Springfield; two sisters, Elizabeth (Steve) Guikema of Chatham and Mary (Jon) Routley of Iowa; a brother, Jerry (Pam) Harlow of Springfield; one uncle; five nieces; four nephews; a great-niece; a great-nephew; and several cousins.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 25, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Frazier officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park.
