SPRINGFIELD – Melvin L. Slusser, 80, of Springfield died on Sunday, August 22, 2010 at St. John’s Hospital. He was born April 5, 1930 in Litchfield, IL the son of Louis and Eva Farmer Slusser. He married Dolores Jean Ballinger on October 24, 1953 in Litchfield. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Melvin is survived by his wife, Dolores, 1 son, Barry of Niantic, IL, 1 daughter; Paula Bodine of Springfield, 5 grandchildren; Nicholas Bodine, Hillary Slusser, Benjamin Slusser, Meredith Slusser and Bradley Bodine, 4 great-grandchildren; Taylor Bodine, Ian Slusser, Preston Slusser, and Kamden Bodine, 3 sisters; Betty Irene (husband: Gordon) Slightom of Atwater, IL, Catherine (husband: Warren) Wolfe of Litchfield, IL and Carol(husband: Robert) Conner of Flora Vista, NM, and several nieces and nephews.
Mel graduated from Litchfield High School in 1948 and served in the US Navy from 1948-1952. He worked for Allis-Chalmers/Fiat-Allis and retired after 30 years. He then worked for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois and retired from there after 7 years. Mel was a member of the First Presbyterian Church serving as a deacon, elder and trustee.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until time of funeral services at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at First Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Dr. Clifford Hayes officiating. Burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County.
