Maxine E. “Mickey” Windsor, 89, of Springfield, died at 10:15 pm, Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at her home. She was born May 17, 1924 in Georgetown, Illinois, the second child of Gladys Whitemore Windsor and Ward Rand Windsor.
She graduated from Canton High School in 1942. During High School she sang in a Quartet that won first place in State Competition. As a soloist she also won several awards at State. At age 12 she sang solos in several churches in the Canton Area.
Mickey worked for Caterpillar and International Harvester as a time keeper. In 1951, she attended Bright’s Floral Design School in Chicago. Upon completion she and her close friend Florine Derrickson opened the “Abingdon Flower Shop” in Abington, Illinois. In 1963, they sold their shop and Mickey moved to Springfield. She worked for the State of Illinois Department of Registration and Education in the Accounting Department until her retirement in 1982.
Mickey was a member of First Christian Church and sang in the choir. In 1977, she joined Laurel United Methodist Church and continued that membership until death. She also sang in the Laurel choir.
Mickey was an avid golfer and won the City of Canton Championship. She was a former member of The Rail Women’s Golf League and the Springfield Craft Club. Her hobby was needlepoint. Mickey made 71 needlepoints and many of these are in the homes of family and friends. She entered several of these in the State Fair and won blue ribbons for some of them.
Mickey made a needlepoint of the Last Supper which is 48X24; she donated it to the Laurel United Methodist Church and it hangs in the Chapel. It took her over 500 hours to complete.
Her parents; two brothers, Joseph and Stanley and her sister, Harriet all preceded her in death.
She is survived by nieces and nephews, many friends and her life time friend, Joy Kimler.
Visitation: 9:30 – 11 am, Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at Laurel United Methodist Church.
Funeral Service: 11 am, Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at Laurel United Methodist Church with Reverend Jerry King officiating. Burial will follow at White Chapel memory Gardens in Canton, IL with a Graveside Service at 2:30 pm.
As Mickey was a florist, flowers would be pleasing to her or memorials can be given to the Laurel United Methodist Church Music Department.
