Maurice W. Shofner, 86, of Petersburg, died at his residence at 9:26 am, Saturday, February 12, 2011. He was born July 31, 1924 in Greenup, IL to W.O. and Gladys Sherwood Shofner. He first married Thelma Ausmus. He then married L. Geraldine Cooper Starkweather and she preceded him in death in 1989. Later he married Bette J. Nelch and she survives him. Also surviving are one son, Richard W. (Jane) Shofner of Springfield; one step-daughter, Deborah J. (Dow) Grider of Sherman; two step-sons, Donald (Betty) Starkweather of Girard, IL and Dan Starkweather of Hettick, IL; four sisters, Ruby Hutson of Greenup, IL, Vera (Ed) Ward of Bloomington, IL, Verna (Bill) Thomas of Morton, IL and Camelia Boyd of Jackpot, NV; 14 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Sherwood Shofner; one sister, Vivian Brosamer and one step-son, Ronald Starkweather.
Maurice was a resident of Petersburg for 21 years and was formerly a resident of Springfield until 1990. He was a U.S. Army Veteran serving in the WWII and participated in the invasion of Leyte Philippines and Okinawa, Japan. He was a member of 3rd Presbyterian Church, member of IBEW Local #193, American Legion Post 32, and enjoyed caring for his yard and his dogs. In 1987, after 47 years, he retired as an electrician from Local #193.
Visitation: 10 am -12 p.m., Saturday, February 19, 2011 at Staab Funeral Home.
Funeral Service: 12 p.m., Saturday, February 19, 2011 at Staab Funeral Home, with Pastor Brent Mitchell officiating. Military Honors will be conducted by the Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail.
Private family burial will be held at Farmingdale Cemetery at a later date.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to 3rd Presbyterian Church or APL in Springfield, IL.
