Mary Ellen Groesch, 86, of Springfield passed away May 8, 2012 at St. John’s Hospice. She was born January 13, 1926 in Alton, IL the daughter of Charles and Helen Meyer. She married James W. Groesch (Jim) on November 27, 1947 and he survives her.
Mary graduated from Marquette High School in 1944. She then went on to Nurses Training at St. John’s School of Nursing and graduated on June 1, 1947. She worked in the newborn nursery at St. John’s for over 30 years. Mary was a member of Christ the King Church and attended the Fifty Plus Club with husband Jim. She also attended the St. John’s Retirees functions with her nursing friends. Mary enjoyed spending time at their family cabin in Havana, IL during the summer, loved traveling, fishing, painting, and going to lunch with her Club Bunch. She most loved spending time with her large family on all occasions.
Mary is survived by her husband Jim; children James M. Groesch of Bethalto, JoAnn Mumaw (Mark Rolens), C. William Groesch (Lu Ann), Christine LeSeure (Mike), David M. Groesch (Alisa), and Mary E. Becker (Doug) all of Springfield; grandchildren Jill Cummings, Jennifer Groesch, Jim Groesch, Jeff Mumaw, Christy Claycomb, Sarah Chandler, Mandy LeSeure, Beth LeSeure, Cory LeSeure, Ashley Bulpitt, Brent Groesch, Adrienne Groesch, Alison Becker and Matthew Becker. She is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, daughter-in-law Linda Benson Groesch, grandson Mark William Groesch and great-grandson Luke William Chandler.
Visitation: 4-7 pm, Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at Staab Funeral Home with a prayer service at 4 pm.
Funeral Mass: 10:30 am, Thursday, May 10, 2012 at Christ The King Church with Monsignor David Lantz officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
