SPRINGFIELD – Mary Ellen Gietl, 82, of Springfield died at 8:07 a.m. Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at her residence.
She was born Dec. 12, 1926, in Springfield, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth M. Devocelle Bailey. She married William L. Gietl on May 14, 1949. She was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers, Tommy, Charlie and Jimmy Bailey.
Mrs. Gietl was a resident of Springfield all of her life. She had been employed as a secretary at Underwood and Gietl Office Equipment, as well as a homemaker.
She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church. She loved making her candy at the holidays. She loved to cook and enjoyed all school activities she attended with her grandchildren. She was an avid Illini fan. She was a devoted wife and loving mother and grandmother.
Surviving are her husband, William L. Gietl of Springfield; two daughters, Pat (husband, Robert) Green and Shirley Kink, both of Springfield; two sons, Al (wife, Karen) Gietl and Greg (wife, Ginnie) Gietl, both of Springfield; six grandchildren, Kelly (husband, Butch) Leach of Springfield, Kerry (husband, Michael) Harden of Springfield, Amy (husband, Steve) Alton of Rochester, Zach Gietl of Springfield and Kellby and Kassidy Gietl, both of Springfield; great-grandsons, Alex Harden and Tyler Leach; several sisters-in-law; a brother, Gene (wife, Monica) Bailey of Springfield; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Friday, March 6, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home with prayers at 4 p.m. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 7, 2009, at St. Joseph’s Church with Monsignor Thomas Holinga officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
